“When we had gotten married, he confessed to me about his past – that was recent at that time – and that he very much enjoyed going to clubs and the nightlife”, Yusifiy said.
Mateen, 29, was shot dead by cops after killing 49 people at Pulse nightclub and wounding over 50.
Anyone who has had contact with Mateen, either in person or online, is asked to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, submit a tip online at, or call your local FBI office.
Investigators also are looking at whether his wife knew anything beforehand about the shooting.
On Saturday night, hours before the rampage, Mateen visited Disney Springs, an outdoor restaurant, retail and entertainment complex at Walt Disney World, an official who was briefed on the case said.
On Tuesday, a survivor of the massacre, 20-year-old Patience Carter, shed more light on Mateen’s thinking, saying he talked about wanting America to “stop bombing my country” – a possible reference to his father’s native Afghanistan.
Witnesses have said the same to authorities, NPR’s Dina Temple-Raston reports, citing us officials with knowledge of the investigation.
A Seeking Information poster regarding the deceased Mateen is available on the FBI’s website.
He also wrote: “The real muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the west” and “You kill innocent women and children by doing us airstrikes.now taste the Islamic state vengeance”.
In what Mr Johnson described as the gunman’s final post, he wrote: “In the next few days you will see attacks from the Islamic state in the US”. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.
The shooter pledged allegiance to ISIS a short time before he was killed.
Federal investigators have said he was likely self-radicalized and there was no evidence that he received any instruction or aid from outside groups such as Islamic State. Obama said it was increasingly clear Mateen “took in extremist information and propaganda over the internet” and appeared to be “an angry, disturbed, unstable young man who became radicalized”.
He hung up the phone after Gentili asked him if there was anything else he wanted to say.
Neighbors said Noor hasn’t been home in more than a year.
