Rainer Hengst expected to see his family surfing the waves, not an alligator.

Beachgoers in South Carolina were left shocked on Sunday after they spotted thi s seven-foot alligator on the coastline.

“The alligator would come in to about knee-deep water and then go back out”, Hengst said on Monday. “I’ve lived here for 10 years and this was my first time seeing one out there”.

Alligators are freshwater animals, but according to the NOAA they can tolerate salt water for up to a few days.

“There were multiple calls for an alligator in the surf”, said Michael Fanning, Pawleys Island police chief.

Over the course of two hours the police followed the gator as it swam slowly along the shoreline. He said the gator was the second to be captured after getting caught in the ocean’s current this summer.
