Free Speech restored: Supreme Court okays ‘Udta Punjab’ release
However, the CBFC was slammed by the Bombay High Court on Monday for its archaic decision and ordered that the movie be cleared with a single cut (Udta Punjab wins the battle against the Censor Board, June 13Th).

Even before critics had pronounced their verdict, social media was abuzz with reactions from celebrities and others. The filmmakers scored another victory when Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed two similar petitions.Film industry top guns Karan Johar and Aamir Khan today reaffirmed their support for Udta’s makers.
The pre-release buzz of “Udta Punjab” is vast given the legal war that followed the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) order for a whopping 89 cuts to make the movie fit for release.
“If it was “Udta Punjab” makes” row with CBFC last week after after it suggested 89 cuts, the film continues to make headlines, for different reasons though.

Maintaining that the film deals with drug problem in Punjab, the counsel said the expletives should be seen in totality, not in isolation.
The court, however, directed the NGO that had moved the apex court to stall the screening of the movie which features actors Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. The film is expected to carry a positive word of mouth from its target audience and has the benefit of a clear run at the Box Office till the release of Sultan this Eid. He further said it was blackmail and stated that they got the official letter in a day after going to the press and immediately after the first hearing of the Court.
“I’ve heard a few people are planning to protest against the film, but I don’t think this will affect it in anyway”.

Kashyap’s plea has come in light of a large chunk of film being mischievously leaked just two days before its release.
