Murdered British MP complained of threats

It comes as tributes pour in for the 41-year-old, who was gunned down in her constituency following an advice surgery at a local library.

The attack was the worst on a sitting British politician since a string of deaths at the hands of Northern Irish terror groups more than 20 years ago.

Torbay MP Kevin Foster said he was “horrified” by what had happened.

Worcester MP Robin Walker said: “This is really shocking and utterly appalling, it’s such a loss”. She cared. She cared about issues and people.

He said: ‘It would be no exaggeration to say that both of us felt about her as though she was a beloved niece because that’s the kind of relationship it was.

Lincoln’s MP Karl McCartney said: “The whole McCartney family is stunned by such sad news that courageous Jo Cox has died of her injuries”.

She called on her party to: “encourage the Israeli government to open up all crossings into and out of Gaza, and urgently allow free and unfettered access to Gaza for goods”.

The day before her death, Jo Cox was out on the Thames in an inflatable boat with her husband Brendan Cox, and their two children, as part of a flotilla campaigning against Britain leaving the EU. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brendan and Jo’s family at this hard time”.

A London neighbour of Jo Cox said her husband was “in bits” following the horrific killing.

The Labour leader said: “We need our whole society to be secure”.

Mr Corbyn was flanked by fellow members of the Labour party, many of them shaking and tearful, as they lit candles and one by one laid them beside the photograph of a smiling Ms Cox.

A Worcester-based MEP was also among those to pay tribute to Mrs Cox, saying he feels in “pain” from it.

“She was a fearless campaigner, and a voice for the voiceless”.

He added that a planned rally on Friday, June 17 has been cancelled as a mark of respect for Jo Cox and her family.

“We pay tribute to our fantastic, wonderful and spirited member of this community – a beacon of hope who believed in love, friendship and values that we all so much need at this time”.

Constituents, friends and colleaguespacked out St Peter’s Church in Birstall, West Yorks., to mourn their MP, friend and peer.

Organisers said the event at Forest Green Rovers’ New Lawn Stadium tonight had been postponed in light of the tragedy.

“Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy and a zest for live that would exhaust most people”.

Police said an investigation was underway to establish the motive for the murder, which halted campaigning a week before Britain’s referendum on whether to leave the European Union, a debate marked by divisions over immigration. “Her death is an affront to British democracy and values, which she clearly worked so hard to promote and protect”.

She graduated from Cambridge University in 1995 and worked as an adviser for former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah, and Baroness Kinnock. And I think those were the last words Jo spoke.
