Guy, 19, won Silver in Sunday’s 400m free final behind Sun Yang of China, but the positions were reversed in Tuesday’s final.

Guy led after 100m, but trailed both Sun and Lochte with one length to go before digging deep to record a memorable triumph over a field stacked with Olympic and world champions.

Guy, who picked up silver in Sunday’s 400m freestyle, managed to go one better and win gold over four lengths whilst also setting a new British record with a time of one minute 45.15 seconds. “He gave it his best shot and that’s why I think of him”. “I just thought about swimming my own race and getting my tactics right and if I beat anyone it was a bonus”.

“I’ve got a few days off now so it will be nice to get a few days rest and move on ready for the 800m”.

“There’s more there for me”, Guy said. You look at Ryan Lochte’s underwater phases and he’s like a dolphin.

Commonwealth champion Ben Proud booked a spot in his first World final, touching second in his semi and sixth overall in the 50m Butterfly while Rachael Kelly missed out on the 100m Butterfly final by just 0.22 seconds as she placed 12th from the semis.

That broke the mark set by Cameron van der Burgh in Tuesday morning’s heats of 26.62.

The pair will race again in the final on Wednesday afternoon.

“I feel pretty stoked really”, said Peaty.
