The body was later removed to Sligo Regional Hospital, where a full autopsy is expected to be carried out today.

“The Office of the State Pathologist and the local coroner have been notified”, a Garda spokesman said.

The investigation is ongoing.

He was in his late 50s and lived alone.

It was reported he had received stab wounds, and Gardai are treating the death as suspicious.

Sources said they were investigating if Mr Kivlehan, who was also known as Martin, was stabbed during a dispute.

Local councillor Seamus O’Boyle described the victim, who he knew for over 30 years, as a “gentleman”.

“He was a nice man, very well thought of in the Forthill area”, Cllr O’Boyle said.

The deceased has been named locally as Matt Kivlehan.
