The wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub has come under increasing scrutiny by officials over whether she had knowledge of the attack beforehand.
Omar Mateen pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State in a 911 call prior to carrying out the attack, but US officials haven’t found any indication he was connected to the terror group or that he was acting on its behalf.
Salman was reportedly with Omar Mateen when he bought ammo and once drove him to Pulse nightclub, possibly to scope it out for an attack.
Federal authorities in Orlando and around the nation are scrambling to connect dots in the wake of Sunday’s massacre by an Islamist terrorist, with potential charges looming for the gunman’s wife as early as Wednesday and agents tracing poossible ties to radical Muslims in the USA and overseas. Reuters also quotes law enforcement sources as saying Salman is the subject of an investigation.
In addition, the committee said it wanted information about Mateen’s use of social media before and during the attack, and the FBI’s communication with state and local law enforcement about Mateen’s comments about terrorism prior to the attack. Lee Bentley III, the US attorney for the Middle District of Florida.
Mateen’s wife has gone into seclusion. Reports indicate a federal grand jury has been convened to investigate possible wrongdoing, and there is a possibility that criminal charges will be brought against her.
Unlike the four Disney World theme parks, Downtown Disney, which was recently renamed Disney Springs, doesn’t have security and bag check before entry.
An official who was briefed on the case but insisted on anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation said authorities believe Noor Mateen knew ahead of time about the attack. A neighbor said Noor Salman only visited her mother once after she married Mateen. “That’s when I started worrying about my safety and he was abusing me physically very often and not allowing me to speak to my family and he kept me hostage from them”.
The caller then told Gentili: “I’m the shooter”.
“If you’re asking me about my daughter-in-law, I’m not going to have any answer for you”, Mateen said. During the shooting he called 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the shooting on the group’s official radio station, al-Bayan.
