Hero’s welcome for Special Olympic team

Hundreds of cheering fans greeted Team Ireland’s Special Olympic Athletes at Dublin Airport this morning.

Thirty-one personal bests and 41 placement ribbons were also achieved.

The Irish athletes won medals in all 12 sports they competed in, including basketball, swimming and athletics.

Her brother William added: “It’s been a really great experience for me, going to LA and supporting my sister as she represented Team Ireland in gymnastics”. “Towards the end our defence picked up and our shooting got a bit better”. “Together, they displayed truly Olympian qualities”, she said.

“It was brilliant stuff, we’re all so, so proud of her”.

Some of the athletes were given local homecoming parties to commend their achievements in LA.

The Team Ireland CEO, Matt English, said: “Each and every member of Team Ireland has put in an extraordinary effort here in Los Angeles”.

Speaking in the wake of what was a hugely successful World Games, Special Olympics CEO Matt English said: “So much work goes into preparing a team for competition on the World sporting stage. I know the people of Ireland will welcome back our athletes and give them the hero’s welcome they rightly deserve”, he stated.
