Death toll in Pakistan floods hits 150

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said efforts were being made to reach out to victims, who number at least 752,274.

Pakistani authorities say the death toll from flash floods triggered by seasonal monsoon rains in various parts of the country has risen to 118.

According to the NDMA, up to 77 people were killed in the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and 32 in the eastern province in Punjab.

The recent flood across the country has inundated at least 2000 villages and around caused damage to at more than 2,747 houses.

Another 22 were killed in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, 13 in the southern-western province of Balochistan and seven in Gilgit-Baltistan in the north.

Since the launch of operation “madad”, a total of more than 12,000 people have been rescued.

Besides transporting them to safe areas and providing them all necessary medical assistance, a tent colony has also been established by Pakistan Navy (PN) at Khairpur for temporary rehabilitation of flood affected people, said a statement issued on Monday. It said he expressed deepest regret over the devastation, loss of life and property.

Neil Garvie, Christian Aid’s Emergency Programme Manager for Pakistan, said today: “The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that with heavy rains expected over the next five days, the situation will worsen”.

Almost 400 people were killed and crops on thousands of acres of land were destroyed by floods last year during the monsoon, which lasts from mid-July until the end of August.
