Dozens of raids, 12 arrests in Belgian anti-terror raid

Belgian police arrested 12 in anti-terror raids, prosecutors said Saturday.

Following the raids, the prosecutors said 40 people were taken in for questioning, 12 of whom were arrested but have not been identified.

Belgium has been on a high state of alert since terrorists allied to the Islamic State group killed 32 people in suicide bombings at Brussels airport and on the city’s subway.

No arms or explosives had been found in the overnight raids, the office added.

Authorities are also especially attentive to security threats during the ongoing European football championships in neighboring France. Belgium is playing Ireland Saturday afternoon and big gatherings to watch the game are planned across the nation. The investigatory results necessitated an immediate intervention. Since Friday evening, several members of Belgium’s federal government, including Prime Minister Charles Michel, have been subject to heightened security protection, broadcaster RTBF said, without saying where it got the information.

Also on Friday police arrested and detained a 30-year-old man named as Youssef E.A, a Belgian national, on suspicion of taking part in terrorist activities in connection with the Brussels attacks.
