Monsoon advances up to parts of Odisha, Bihar & Jharkhand

But today many places in Odisha, as well as nearby states, have received rainfall; the monsoon current has advanced into Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, the whole of West Bengal, remaining parts of Sikkim, and some parts of Bihar.

After a making a slow progress, the southwest monsoon is expected to gain momentum and advance further into several parts of drought-hit Maharashtra and central India. “It has covered the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Puri, as well as some portions of the adjoining districts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati”, a bulletin issued by IMD said.

The department said heavy rainfall was likely at one or two places over north and southern districts of the state tomorrow. Rainfall figures for other areas is as follows Malda 35 mm, Purnea 40 mm, Forbesganj 29.5 mm, Puri 22 mm. Conditions are favourable for monsoon covering remaining districts in the next 48 hours since a cyclonic circulation has formed over the north-western Bay of Bengal on the Odisha-Andhra coast under its influence rains are likely to occur. “But looking at the sub par conditions of Southwest Monsoon as of now, it will be hard to predict if the rains will be able to match the prediction”, said G.P. Sharma, a weather expert from Skymet weather laboratory. Bihar has been receiving deficient monsoon rainfall for the past four years.

Sriniketan recorded the day’s highest temperature in the State at 34.2 degrees C, while Kolkata was cooler at 32.8 degrees. The state had received 1198.5 mm rainfall in 2015, including 1024 mm during monsoon period.

Bhubaneswar: The much awaited South West monsoon has made landfall in Odisha and its official now. The state government has confirmed over 20 sunstroke deaths this year, though unofficial figures put it more than 120.
