Johnson was the club’s only reliever who didn’t pitch against the Rays. Seattle won 10-0.

Media outlets are reporting that Sampson traveled with the Seattle Mariners to Boston, where they began a three-game series with the Red Sox on Friday.

To bolster a tired bullpen, the Mariners recalled two relievers from Triple-A Tacoma, right-hander Jonathan Aro and left-hander David Rollins.

Ironically, the Mariners cleared space for the reinforcements by designating right-hander Steve Johnson for assignment (in addition to putting Miley on the disabled list).

Miley joins another starter, Felix Hernandez, on the DL.

Sampson, 24, is 7-4 with a 3.25 ERA in 13 starts for the Rainiers. Seattle acquired Sampson from the Pirates for LHP J.A. Happ on July 31, 2015. Sampson has never pitched in the big leagues. He was acquired from Boston Dec. 7 (with Aro) in exchange for Roenis Elias and Carson Smith. His 111 starts since 2013 are the most of any left-hander in Major League Baseball. This season Miley is 6-3 with a 5.28 ERA in 13 starts. In 21 relief appearances, Aro is 2-2 with one save and a 2.79 ERA. Over six minor-league seasons, Aro is 18-17 with a 2.80 ERA in 123 appearances, including 13 starts. Rollins is 2-0 with a 2.36 ERA in 22 games with the Rainiers this season, all in relief. Sampson has struck out 61 while walking 12.

Aro and Rollins will both be available to pitch Friday night in Boston.
