A trip to Southampton then follows, who are never an easy game such is the talent in their ranks, before Manchester City visit South Wales.

Pep Guardiola will close out the year on Merseyside with his Manchester City boys on New Year’s Eve while a trip to Old Trafford mid-month will get the old circle on the calendar treatment. Chelsea have home games against newly-promoted Middlesbrough and perennial strugglers Sunderland, with a trip to West Bromwich Albion sandwiched in between.

Arguably the pick of the opening round of games is Arsenal v Liverpool, both of whom will start the season confident of producing a title challenge.

The release of the fixtures today threw up some meaty first-day tussles, with last season’s runners-up Arsenal hosting Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool.

His bitter rival from his days at Chelsea, Arsene Wenger, will have his Arsenal side host Liverpool in the most high-profile match of the opening day.

It is good news for defending champions Leicester City, who will be at home after each of their six group games (Burnley, Southampton, Crystal Palace, West Brom, Middlesbrough, Manchester City).

The Reds will be looking to improve upon their eighth-placed finish last season and secure Champions League football after failing to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.

Mourinho will return to Stamford Bridge to play former club Chelsea on October 22.

The first derby match will be at Goodison Park on December 17, the last fixture before Christmas.
