Yahoo & Sony in Negotiations for Possible ‘Community’ Season 7; Joel McHale

They wanted to turn around and do a movie immediately, and Yahoo! can get it done.

The actor, who played smug former lawyer Jeff Winger on the ensemble comedy, says that we can blame its stars’ industry standard six-year contracts for the show’s death. Although McHale had previously left open the possibility that new contracts with higher pay would be negotiated, it looks like that won’t be happening.

When the Yahoo season wrapped, Harmon said he was taking a break, but that a movie was something Yahoo wanted to do.

Yahoo has responded with a statement that neither confirms nor denies the show’s demise: “We’ve seen tremendous value in our partnership with Sony and are continuing to discuss future opportunities for Community“, a rep tells Mashable. Screen more than two months ago now, though, and we’re still wondering if the “and a movie” part, or perhaps even a Season 7, will materialize for the students and faculty of Greendale Community College. “There is just no enough money to be able to pay for the show”, McHale continued.

Community fans were overjoyed last summer when Yahoo! rescued the show from its NBC cancellation in a move that seemingly fulfilled the “six seasons and a movie” battle cry. “Just go ahead and do that!’ I don’t think that is something that’s like, ‘Let me just have a long weekend.’ The cast would do it. We would all do it”. They’re like the NSA, they’re insane … I think the actors are kind of exploding outward – Ken is now Dr. Ken. It’s probably one of those situations where you wait a couple of years for demand to crescendo, and then you see if you can then get the funding and get everyone back in the same place to make some more episodes.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator and showrunner Dan Harmon said that a movie was more likely than a seventh season of the single-cam comedy, in line with the popular battle cry among fans, #sixseasonsandamovie.
