With just four holes to play, Shane Lowry is in the healthy position of five under at the summit of the US Open leaderboard as he heads into the final day of the tournament in search of his first major win.

‘That has to be one of the best rounds of my career when you consider all the circumstances, ‘ said the big man from Offaly.

“I’ve never felt so comfortable on a course in my life”.

The timing of it better than that.

Landry was more determined than ever not to go away.

Further birdie chances went begging on the first and second before McIlroy’s round imploded on the third, with the world number three four-putting from around 10 feet to run up a double-bogey six.

It wasn’t so enjoyable earlier in the day when he was lining up a 30-foot birdie putt and nudged the ball with his putter. This might be no less shocking. Both were in pursuit of a first major.

You could say that his luck might not have been so great, considering golfers such as Day finished their rounds and will get to sleep late Sunday. Furyk was at 1-under 139 with Daniel Summerhays, Andy Sullivan and Lee Westwood.

The leader in the clubhouse is Branden Grace, who shot a 4-under 66 and is now in sixth place at 1-under par.

Dustin Johnson is no longer leading, but is still one of the favorites at Oakmont. With two holes remaining in his third round he is 1-under the card and T35 on 5-over. He had almost seven hours before he teed off in the final round.

World number one Jason Day surged into striking distance on Saturday at the US Open, leaving his rivals in golf’s “Big Three” in the dust. He had another 72 and was eight shots behind.

Garcia (6-1) and Westwood (9-1) are in a third-place tie with Dustin Johnson, who had the 36-hole lead before losing ground. He stayed there after an even-par round. Falling a few shots behind might actually help him because he will be able to put his foot on the gas pedal.

He missed out on a playoff at the 2010 PGA Championship when he grounded his club in a patch of sand without realizing it was a bunker, perhaps because it was covered with litter and footprints from spectators at Whistling Straits. He hit a 2-iron out of bounds at Royal St. Georges in the 2011 British Open when he was chasing down Darren Clarke. Now that the second round of the U.S. Open is over the list of players who missed the cut is a who’s who of the game.

Johnson started the third round with a one-shot lead. Four shots is nothing on this course.

“I know what I’m doing, but it’s hard to change it out there”, McIlroy said. “I’m going to have to play a good, solid round of golf, though”.

Top-ranked Lydia Ko shot a 67 to reach 11 under.
