The man, whose name has not been released, was with a group of three others near Duncan Lake, which is about 30 miles north of Grand Marais, when the storms with high winds and heavy rain felled trees and knocked out power. A Facebook post by the Rochester Swim Club Orcas says Walz’s son Jacob was also injured in the incident, and is now hospitalized.

He was also a chemistry, calculus and geometry teacher at St. Charles Public School District. He also served as a football coach and Math League adviser.

St. Charles High School Principal Ben Bernard said Craig Walz went above and beyond his job to be a mentor to students.

The incident involving Craig and Tim Walz was one of two calls rescuers responded to Sunday night.

A father was killed and his son severely injured when a tree toppled by a powerful storm fell on their tent in a northeastern Minnesota forest this weekend, according to sheriff’s officials. The storm’s straight line winds snapped large trees in half, he said. The body of the person who died was recovered early Monday due to safety concerns. Emergency responders transported the injured victim out to an awaiting Cook County Ambulance, which took the victim to an area hospital and then to the medical helicopter.
