Charles Bronson starred in the original 1974 film (in turn based on a 1972 novel by the same name) as a NY man who turns vigilante following the murder of his wife. The script is said to hew close to author Brian Garfield’s original novel. The original Death Wish received four sequels (all of which starred Bronson) over the course of the next two decades. The project, which is now set to star Bruce Willis, has been bouncing around for some time – its last set of directors, Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado of Rabies and Big Bad Wolves, left last month.

Prior to the filmmaking duo, The Grey director Joe Carnahan was slated to helm the movie, but he left in 2012. Bruce Willis is attached to star as Paul Kersey, the reluctant vigilante made famous by Charles Bronson, in MGM/Paramount’s long-in-the-works remake of the 1974 hit, AceShowbiz reports. Roth has been trying to expand horizons beyond the horror genre, dipping his toes into more mainstream, big budget studio films. The project comes after Roth’s cannibal film The Green Inferno and 2015’s erotic thriller Knock Knock starring Keanu Reeves. Roth also is returning to host Shark After Dark, Discovery’s Shark Week late-night talk show starting June 26.
