Joe Louis Arena to host Howe visitation
After paying respects at ice level, the public will have the option to head to the concourse level of the arena to view the Gordie Howe statue.

Howe left as a teenager to pursue a hockey career. He says Howe was a walking contradiction – a tough guy on the ice and a teddy bear off it.
I thought I had something they would never touch, Howe said. The Hall of Famer’s career spanned a total of five decades, six if you include a one game stint with the IHL’s Detroit Vipers in 1997 at the age of 69.
It began with Wayne Gretzky, of course. “I met him well after his playing days and it just amazes me how well he interacted with people all day long”. Not just the goals, though he scored 786 in 1,687 National Hockey League games and 121 in 285 WHA contests.
Rest well, Gordie, reunited with your beloved Colleen and once again skating fearlessly into the corners of an eternal hockey game. I looked and it was Gordie Howe. He also scored 30 or more goals in 14 seasons.
Howe remains an icon in the city of Detroit and for players such as former Red Wings All-Star Chris Chelios. The Carolina Hurricanes never officially retired his number, but no one has worn No. 9 since the franchise moved from Hartford.
Jim Rutherford, the Penguins general manager, was fortunate to find himself sharing a dressing room with Howe after making the Red Wings as a 21-year-old rookie in 1970. He also brought an aggressive nature with him to the ice, even as a teenager.
Shand recalled going up against Howe in a game in 1979, and Howe giving Shand an elbow to the face. But the truth is, Howe only did it twice in his career.
Look, it’s not like he’s been fantastic, but considering the state of his career when the Pens took a chance on him, he’s been quite impressive.
And Howe got his skates when his mother bought a sack of items off a neighbour in Saskatoon just to help them out, and it included skates, even though the Howe family had hardly any means themselves.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Two of the biggest stars playing in the Stanley Cup finals – Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and San Jose’s Joe Thornton – both had the honor of meeting Gordie Howe early in their hockey careers, and the moment left a lasting impact. Another son, Murray, is a doctor in OH and daughter Cathy lives in Texas.
She died in March 2009 at age 76 after battling Picks disease, a rare form of dementia similar to Alzheimers. The Detroit Red Wings confirmed his death on Twitter.
Oh, he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, too. After the turn of the century, Howe, his sense of humor in full gear, would walk around Joe Louis Arena in Detroit carrying a teacup poodle named Rocket. The family settled in Glastonbury, embraced life as local celebrities and made a WHA franchise relevant.
Howe suffered a stroke in October 2014 but he had, improbably, rallied to the point of being able to go out shopping and make brief public appearances with one of his four children.
The hardware only tells half the story.

Ahead of Sunday’s $500,000 Woodbine Oaks, presented by Budweiser, Hawley was asked for his take on this year’s race, given the fact that as a jockey, he won the prestigious event a record eight times. It appeared he was near the end of his life. “Anything having to do with Gordie Howe, you’re just humbled”.
