Xiaomi Founder Explains Why the Firm’s Smartphones Aren’t Water-Resistant

Water-resistance is an essential part and feature in nearly every smartphone available in the market today. While Samsung’s Galaxy S7 can work under water for some time, Motorola and HTC’s devices can withstand minor water spills. But Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has a strong reason or two why its smartphones do not sport that particular feature.

In another news, Xiaomi co-founder and president, Lin Bin has said that the company is planning to launch a new high-performance flagship – probably the Mi Note 2 – in July, according to a new report.

Founder Lei Jun has gone on record to explain why Xiaomi phones don’t come with waterproofing capabilities.

According to Jun during a recent press event, waterproofing his company’s phones has the potential to backfire, since any damage phones receive could compromise the water protection they have.

Jun also stated that waterproofing a phone will increase its manufacturing cost by up to 20-30 percent thereby leading to a hike in the price of the device. He, however, confessed that Xiaomi may add the feature if consumers are ready to pay up the extra cost.

As it’s usually the case, Xiaomi had introduced quite a few smartphones this year.

The Redmi 3 has already spawned into three different flavors – the original Redmi 3 with Snapdragon 616 chipset with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage; the Redmi 3 Pro with 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, and fingerprint sensor; and the new Redmi 3s with Snapdragon 430 chip and keeping the 3GB RAM option and fingerprint scanner. Recently, the Chinese tech giant revealed that it will be launching a dedicated Mi Community in India on June 20.
