Finding Dory – which garnered an A CinemaScore – is a needed boost for the summer box office, which has seen a number of sequels underperform.

Finding Dory has smashed box office records to record the highest-grossing animated debut of all time, after taking in $136.2 million in its first weekend of United States release. The 2007 film “Shrek the Third” was the record-holder with a $121.6 million debut.
“Finding Dory”, made by Pixar, beat the animation brand’s opening weekend record of $110.3 million set by “Toy Story 3” in 2010.
In second place at the box office this weekend was Central Intelligence, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, which brought in $34.5 million domestically.
With DeGeneres’ Dory taking the lead in the new chapter, 62% of the audience consisted of women and girls, according to comScore tracking. Pixar’s parent company, Disney, has dominated the movie business.

You see, the 13-year lapse between “Finding Dory” and “Finding Nemo” meant a younger audience attended “Finding Dory” along with “generation Nemo”, a group who saw the first film as children.

It is also the second most successful opening weekend of 2016, behind Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.
There has been no word from the writers or producers about this issue yet, probably because the overall reaction to “Finding Dory” was overwhelmingly positive.

According to Dave Hollis, the executive vice president of distribution for Disney, this movie actually has a much more diverse mix of moviegoers than pretty much any other Pixar movie.
