Phillies draft prep outfielder Moniak with No. 1 overall pick

Thursday June, 9 was the evening the Phillies had the opportunity to change its franchise. That’s probably why he became available to the Phillies with the 42nd pick.

The Philadelphia Phillies shocked the sporting world Thursday night by selecting high school outfielder Mickey Moniak with the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft.

Five UF players were selected.

The Cincinnati Reds took Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel next.

There are plenty of factors that go into deciding what player to take No. 1 in the draft. Power may be the only tool he is lacking, but Phillies Director of Amateur Scouting Johnny Almarez believes he will hit 15-22 home runs per year.

“I take a lot of pride in hitting”, he said. “I didn’t tell my dad”. For it to actually be in reality, I’m honored.

Abrams, a freshman pitcher at Columbia this season, can return the favor by getting picked in the first 20 rounds someday, Moniak said. “I’m excited to hopefully play for those fans and play for this organization”.

Several other players with area ties are expected to hear their names called between the first and second days of the draft.

“It’s insane”, Moniak said on MLB Network. Gerrit Cole did just that himself in 2008 and went on to lead the Bruins to the 2010 College World Series before, ultimately, losing to SC in the championship series. “I like this pick”. Colorado Rockies and Miwaukee Brewers selected Riley Pint and Corey Ray respectively.

Gowdy, who is 6 feet 4 and 175 lbs, throws a fastball that tops out at 94 miles per hour, with a slider and smooth mechanics. “At no time this spring did we think we’d have a chance to talk about him at six”.

One pick after Shore, Florida junior outfielder Buddy Reed went to the San Diego Padres with the 48th overall pick. “I’m not really trying to go out there and light up radar guns or anything”. Followed that up with terrific season for Volunteers, hitting.352 with eight HRs, 59 RBIs and SEC-leading 25 doubles along with 25 SBs that led team.

Florida left-hander A.J. Puk, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound fireballer, has only two wins for the Gators, but has the stuff that could make him a future ace.

Stanford right-hander Cal Quantrill, the son of former big league pitcher Paul Quantrill, was taken at No. 8 by San Diego – despite missing this season after having Tommy John surgery previous year. To share it with all my family right now and friends is awesome.
