Amazon’s latest $80 Kindle has more storage, supports Bluetooth audio

It’ll still last weeks on a single charge. Amazon announced a new, more-affordable Kindle that’s just $80 and will be available in white and black. It will be available in two color options, black or white, and sport a more rounded design, so it’s easier to hold in one hand during long reading sessions (like the new E.L. James book Grey, no doubt).

It also features twice the memory of the previous-generation hardware – 4 gigabytes as opposed to 2 gigabytes – which means you can store more books on the device, rather than having to download them on the go. Other, pricier Kindles, like the $199.99 Voyage and $289.99 Oasis, also feature controls alongside the screen for turning pages. You’ll be able to pair the Kindle with a Bluetooth headphone or speaker. This lets you send your notes and highlights as a PDF to your email for future reference. This feature will arrive via an over-the-air software update in a few weeks, Amazon says. The device is the first with built-in Bluetooth audio support, this will make it possible for visually impaired users to use the VoiceView screen reader on Kindle to read the content of the screen-including reading books and other Kindle content-without the need for an adaptor.

Another feature is the Chinese Word Wise Hints, users can choose between English and Simplified Chinese Word Wise hints by changing the language in Word Wise settings. The $120 Kindle Paperwhite will now be available in white as well. Sadly, neither the Paperwhite nor the Kindle will be getting waterproof status. The new model replaces the cheapest version of the e-reader that has been available for a while, and it doubles the memory, bringing it up to 512MB.
