Mets swap Colon, Syndergaard in rotation against Royals

Colon is injured • Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon was hit on his pitching hand by a line drive Tuesday night and left his start against Kansas City in the first inning because of a bruised thumb. Saturday, Ashtin and his father Aaron traveled to NY to meet Noah Syndergaard and the rest of the Mets during batting practice.

Alcides Escobar and Paulo Orlando had two hits each to lead the Royals bats.

It only gets better for the pint-sized pitcher, Wednesday Ashtin will throw out the first pitch for the team as they face the defending World Series Champs the Kansas City Royals.

Colon was only four pitches into his outing when Whit Merrifield hit a line drive back up the middle that caught Colon on his right thumb.

Nearly unbelievably, Robles was still pitching in the fifth inning with a 2-0 lead forged on home runs by Asdrubal Cabrera in the first and Yoenis Cespedes in the fourth off Ian Kennedy.

The Mets should have Sean Gilmartin available, as he was called up to replace the injured Jim Henderson, although he threw 100 pitches Sunday in his last appearance in Triple-A.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Mets (37-32), who moved back into second place in the National League East by virtue of the Miami Marlins’ loss to the Atlanta Braves.

“Robles came in and did a phenomenal job getting some depth in that game”, Royals manager Ned Yost said. Kansas City has been on a tear of late and have quietly put together a stretch that has them seven games above the.

“Just another series”, he said before the game. “I don’t know if it’s weird or not”.

Alderson said the team is still hoping to avoid surgery for part-time center fielder Juan Lagares, on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb.

After a brief meeting near the mound, Colon walked off the field and into the dugout. Robles was given all the time he needed to warm up.

An ageless wonder, Colon is now in the midst of his third campaign as a member of the Mets while remaining healthy up until this point in time.

Robles took over and provided yeoman’s work.

Four relievers followed with five two-hit innings. The right-hander’s previous career highs were 52 pitches and three innings, in different games. A tiring Robles allowed a leadoff single to Paulo Orlando before walking Cheslor Cuthbert and giving up an RBI single to Brett Eibner. In the ninth, Familia shook off a two-out single by Cuthbert to notch his 23rd save. The last of those hits plated a run for the Royals, making it a 2-1 game. Clay Buchholz (3-6, 5.86) pitches for Boston.

In his first start against the Royals this year, Syndergaard was able to pick up the win after throwing six scoreless innings. “That could spell disaster, but he didn’t allow that to happen”.
