In, well, “duh” news, Disney today suggested that they will eventually put an “Indiana Jones” film into production that doesn’t feature Harrison Ford. “I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it”, he added. “It won’t be just a one-off”, he said. “I don’t know.” We know, we know… that sort of statement can best be described as “clear as mud”, but you had to figure the company would want to keep going. But if Indiana Jones can survive a nuclear blast by simply climbing into a refrigerator, then getting through his 80s should be a breeze.

Indiana Jones 5 (or whatever they ultimately end up calling it) is scheduled for a July 2019 release.
After the not-so-great Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, fans were probably hoping that Lucasfilm would put the most famous fictional archaeologist in the world to rest. It’s also important to note that a prequel would not be unprecedented within the series, both through the TV show and the movies themselves, with 1984’s Temple of Doom having taken place before Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the first 20 minutes of Last Crusade is also a flashback to Young Indy. It would, he said, “not [be] like Star Wars” (that franchise has as many as five movies upcoming). “It won’t be just a one-off”.
Can the Indiana Jones series move on without Indy? That’s what I mean.

Which suggests more films, and in turn, clears up nothing. That ensures the franchise has a future under the House of Mouse up to 2019 and beyond, and the fact that Iger and Co. have plans to continue the adventure leads us to believe that recasting the title role of Indy will be all but inevitable in a few years’ time.
