Portugal and Hungary through after 3-3 thriller

Petulant Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo invented a new way to decline an interview when he threw a reporter’s microphone into a lake before the Euro 2016 clash with Hungary.

If he scores, he will become the first player to do so at four consecutive Euro tournaments.

Nani levelled matters just before half-time and a insane 17-minute spell after the break saw Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak twice put them back into the lead only for Ronaldo to cancel it out both times.

Three times in the same game, the Portuguese were on the verge of an embarrassing first round exit from the tournament but three times Christiano Ronaldo reacted and he did so with panache, setting up Nani and scoring a brace, one of which could pass for the tournament’s best goal.

They were unable to score a second and as Austria threw more players forward, Iceland hit them on the counter in the final seconds, with Traustason scoring the victor.

Ronaldo went onto rescue Portugal against Hungary as he scored two goals in the thrilling match to help his team earn a 3-3 draw.

Lyon: Cristiano Ronaldo was both the problem and the solution for Portugal as they squeezed into the Euro 2016 knockout stages with a exhilarating 3-3 draw against Hungary on Wednesday.

Portugal’s players have offered little insight into what is going wrong, saying merely that if they keep trying, the goals will start flowing eventually. “We know their strengths but we will look them in the eyes when we face them”, he said.

Austria, needing a win to survive the group, levelled the tie on the hour mark when substitute Alessandro Schoepf raced into the box and surprised Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson with a low shot.

But he delivered when it mattered as Portugal equalized three times in a topsy-turvy match – not one for the faint-hearted. “We have to have our best game but we know that even though Iceland can have the best performance we’ve ever had, we can still lose against nations like England”.

After Germany, they are also the team that has enjoyed the most possession, at an average of 62 percent per match.

“I’ve always supported England in big worldwide tournaments, it’s a dream come true”, he said.

Iceland coach Lars Lagerback enjoyed a fine record against England as Sweden boss and said he was keen to see that continue, but does think their next opponents are favourites to win the game. We will go into this game with full force to get a result.

“I have to praise my players, they responded three times when we were out”.
