We will be providing live updates throughout the day, with exit polls, reporters on the ground at stations around the county and breaking news as it happened. More than two million people have joined the electoral roll since December, the Electoral Commission said last night, despite problems with the voter registration system as the deadline approached.

Mr Shields said: “I can certainly say we’re expecting a high turnout”. Keep in mind to bring a correct form of photo ID with you.

Heavy rain may have affected the borough’s transport network, but all the polling stations remain open as normal.

The decision on what merits the granting of this extra time is down to the local returning officer.

Without it you won’t be able to vote in the referendum.

The latest one is expected to be the Seven Towers Leisure Centre, Ballymena, where results are estimated to be in at about 4am.
