Possible Ebola infection in Birmingham

The Birmingham Police Department confirms a person exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms is being treated at UAB Hospital Tuesday night, according to ABC 33/40.

Six firefighters that responded to the call have been isolated and undergone decontamination.

The area around the home has been closed to traffic. The Jefferson County Health Department said that doctors at the hospital were now conducting tests on the patient to determine whether he was infected with the Ebola virus.

Authorities say crews from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are en route to Birmingham.

Earlier this summer, Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital was placed on alert after a patient presented with Ebola-like symptoms.

There have been no diagnosed cases of Ebola in Alabama.

“They didn’t participate in any high risk activities, such as burial ceremonies or health care work”, said Kahn.
