The man stopped his vehicle, got out and immediately began shooting at the deputy, hitting him several times, the sheriff’s department said.
The driver ran away and fired at other deputies, striking one. The motorist fired at a third group of deputies.
The suspect continued firing several rounds at responding deputies, striking another with gunfire, officials said. Deputies from the Special Enforcement Bureau are actively searching for the outstanding suspect. The suspect then fled on foot.
A search was underway for the outstanding suspect or suspects in the area of Lakewood Boulevard between Alondra Boulevard and Flower Street, the department tweeted. During an early Friday morning press conference, authorities said deputies were conducting a DUI checkpoint in the area when a suspect began driving erratically in an attempt to flee from the checkpoint.
It was not immediately apparent whether the suspect was wounded in the rolling gun battles. The second deputy hit was scheduled for surgery but otherwise in “fair” condition, the department stated.
Both deputies were transported to a local hospital where they are being prepared to undergo surgery.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the gunman holed up in a home in Bellflower and had been holding someone hostage.
