Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt took a sigh of relief after Udta Punjab finally made its way to the theatres on Friday despite all the controversies, and were happy with the initial response to the film.
Since word of the leaked print of Udta Punjab (meant only for the Censor Board) spread like wildfire, several fans and celebrities have spoken out against piracy of films over the internet. After a long wait, the movie got clearance from censor board and just after that, this illegal activity has occurred.
The Abhishek Chaubey-directed movie talks about the issue of substance abuse in the state of Punjab through the stories of a high-on-drugs rock star (Shahid Kapoor), a migrant (Alia Bhatt), a doctor (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and a policeman (Diljit Dosanjh). About films leaking online, Ekta said, “There are various institutions that have actually come together to see that piracy is actually handled”.
On Thursday, the bench asked the petitioner how it was affected by the Bombay High Court order telling the censors to give “A” certificate to the film when the CBFC and the Punjab government had not challenged it. Instead, they approached the Bombay High Court. “When they are deprived of the drugs, they tend to become restless, annoyed and start showing withdrawal symptoms”, the bench said, adding that although the film is based on drug problem, the use of expletives may not have been necessary.
Also starring Sonam Bajwa and Monica Gill, the film is slated to release on June 24. I think my friends and I did most of the work in the middle of the night.
Meanwhile, Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal today said the controversy surrounding Udta Punjab is an attempt to malign the image of Punjab and its people. The film’s makers and trade experts are hopeful the movie will fly high at the box office.
