Thakur said that ‘after discussions we have taken a final call that for one year Anil Kumble will be the head coach’.
Former India opener Pravin Amre, Lalchand Rajput, Australians Stuart Law, Tom Moody and Englishman Andy Moles were among others who made their presentations on Tuesday. “I can only do short-term assignments, I can’t stay away from home for long periods of time, short assignments suit me better”, he had said earlier.
Kumble, who captained India during his illustrious playing career, will begin his tenure with a four-Test tour of the West Indies, starting next month. With 619 wickets, he is India’s highest Test wicket taker. He had never coached a side before this selection but has been a mentor in the IPL, first with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and then Mumbai Indians (MI).
BCCI President Anurag Thakur will announce the name of Indian cricket team’s head coach today.
Sourav Ganguly had said that the committee has not discussed the finalization of coach’s name with India’s One day and T20 captain MS Dhoni and Test captain Virat Kohli, as the committee is empowered to do so. “It’s about who is the best for Indian cricket”.
“It is not about [hiring] an Indian or foreign coach”.
Former leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who played in 403 worldwide matches for India, has been confirmed as his country’s new head coach.
BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke added: “Kumble is transforming himself from a great on the field into a great coach”.
“This is the first time that we have gone through a process starting with advertisements”. “The Board is confident that Mr. Kumble will meet the consistent high standards of professionalism set by the Indian team and fulfills the expectations of the followers of Indian Cricket”, it said.
