Ali’s wife thanks world for its support since his death
Like the rest of those who gathered to hear Muhammad Ali that night back in early 1971, during his darkest time, I sat and listened, dazed and amazed during his articulate, humorous speech at Trenton State College.

Ali, who was once scorned for converting to Islam and lost three years of his boxing career for refusing USA military service during the Vietnam War, ended up becoming one of the most celebrated Americans in modern history, at home and overseas. “I just didn’t want to believe it because I wanted him to live forever”. She is now embracing the role of chief advocate for his legacy. “A person who for African Americans, I think, liberated their minds in recognizing that they could be proud of who they were”.
Starting at 9 am (1300 GMT), the funeral procession will wind through the city of 600,000 where Ali was born at a time of racial segregation.
I like these statements of Ali on the goal of our life: “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”.
I would have loved to ask Mariam that follow up question as a journalist myself, but alas, I don’t even know if she’s still alive or did she ever return home to her native India. City buses flashed “Ali – The Greatest” in orange lights.
He added: “Ali forced us to take a look at ourselves”.
Ali’s life is not a salve for America’s conscience – it is a sharp prick that should inspire us to action.
“He taught us life is best when we build bridges between us, not walls”. “But we had so much respect for one another, and that’s something I’ll cherish and always respect with my father”.
“He wanted us to remind people who are suffering, that he had seen the face of injustice”, she said.
In 1967, Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. military, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War. “What keeps me going is goals”, admitted Ali.
Lerner condemned Trump in his remarks, criticizing the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for proposing to ban Muslims from entering the United States, the Huffington Post reported.
“Muhammad Ali was America”.
Ali converted to Islam in his early 20s and was only 30-years-old when he visited Kuwait in January 1972, which was an interesting time in his career as a heavy-weight boxer.
The picture with my father at the press event in Kuwait from January 1972 was taken just a few months after he lost “The Fight of the Century” to Joe Frazier in March 1971.
Ali, the most magnetic and controversial athlete of the 20th century, died last Friday at 74 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. This young man would go on to take his revenge from Frazier later in January 1974, two years after this picture was taken.
“The things Ali would say and then do them”.
He paid a price for that fame and fortune.
And get used to him we did.
In that leaflet from the past, Ali had also made it clear that he was out there to achieve something bigger than just boxing feats. “I grew up having my identity shaped by what he accomplished”, he said.
“The Zionist groups are dominant in America and it is very hard there to say the truth”, Ali said.
Yes, he indeed mentioned “Zionist groups” at a time when not everyone would automatically get labelled as anti-Semitic.
“He was a tremendous bolt of lightning, created by Mother Nature out of thin air, a fantastic combination of power and beauty”, comedian Billy Crystal said in an address that had the crowd of about 15,000 laughing at almost every turn.
“There are white Muslims, black Muslims, yellow Muslims and brown Muslims; similarly there are white Christians. Let me tell you that in the eyes of Allah, Muslims are equal and brothers, there is no colour discrimination”, Ali said. Also, isn’t the notion of Muslim unity a joke today? “Even in death, Muhammad has something to say”.

Another event is planned for Tuesday to address the issue.
