“The last couple years I’ve focused more on freestyle but we still haven’t decided which I’m going to swim yet”, said Gemmell, who is coached by his father, Bruce. “But at the same time …” “I know what it’s like to deal with the nerves”. He will attend the University of Virginia this fall. “It’s the biggest meet on American soil, so it’ll be exciting to see what we can do”.

Ledecky could swim the 100m through 800m freestyles and the 400m individual medley, though the latter could be merely to get her feet wet on the first day of the meet.

These high-level meets aren’t new for Adams.

Donahue, who will also compete in the 200-meter butterfly, graduated from Western Kentucky in 2011 shortly before making waves on the global circuit for the American team.

“When I went in 2012, it was more of a learning experience”, Adams said. “Now that I know more of what to expect, I’d say I have a much different approach going in this year”. He has been the associate head coach for the Patriots since 2013, coaching the senior group filled with high-school aged swimmers. They’re on point. When he tries to go down to 100, that’s when he has to force things. “I’m just trying to swim some best times and hopefully that gets me there”.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin is entered in four of her signature events: 100m and 200m freestyle and 100m and 200m backstroke. We’ll never win it, because the cheaters are always a step ahead, but, again, I’ve seen more positive in this go-round than I’ve seen – and I’ve been at every Olympic Games since ’92 – than I’ve seen in the past.

Only the top two swimmers make the team. While training under Lobo Aquatic Club’s Doug Forbes, she earned her time trial cut last summer at the Speedo Western Championships in OR at age 17.

“If you have a lane, you have an opportunity”, Adams said. “So, I think probably this freshman year is when I honestly, truthfully believed I could make the trial cut”. She and some teammates even traveled to Colorado Springs to train at the Olympic Training Center for a couple of weeks.

Luckily for Lochte, the team arrived in Omaha a few days ahead of the beginning of the Olympic swim trials.

Carmel has been a powerhouse when it comes to swimming.

Anthony Kim just graduated high school, and in his final year he led Albuquerque Academy to their 22 state championship. He’ll be one of the busier locals having qualified in three sprint freestyle events (50, 100, 200). “So if the training’s there it’s just a matter of getting it out in the water when we need to”.

That way of thinking seems to be working.

“He started at 10 years old, didn’t really want to swim, but I think he got into it because he saw some other kids swimming and they all matched their bathing suits, so he thought that was cool”, said the swimmer’s father, David Lamparella.

No one will be busier than Ledecky, who could bid to become the first US woman to swim the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle at a single Olympics. “I felt like I figured out myself and swimming and where I belonged on the national stage”.
