The Braves got a win in their homestand opener Thursday night against the Mets, and the Turner Field crowd got a throwback-Thursday moment of sorts when interim manager Brian Snitker was ejected and left with a fiery display reminiscent of legendary Braves manager Bobby Cox. The Mets have lost four of six.
“Feels good to win that game, for sure”. Loney also socked a three-run homer.
Brandon Snyder hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer and Adonis Garcia had a two-run double in Atlanta’s big inning. His season-long struggles after the third inning continued as he gave up a run in the fourth and sixth to increase his ERA in those frames to 7.65.
James Loney hit a three-run homer, Travis d’Arnaud drove in three runs and NY survived Atlanta’s six-run fifth inning off Matz to beat the Braves 8-6 on Friday night.
Harvey’s fastball velocity hovered in the mid-90s miles per hour, and he commanded it well most of the night before Sean Gilmartin replaced him to begin the seventh.
Matz dd not strike out a batter for the first time in his 19 career starts. He’s 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in two starts against the Mets. “They were aggressive the whole game and they got to me”. “The offense picked us up today”.
Alejandro De Aza’s RBI double put the Mets up 1-0 in the second. However, the Mets had to hold on for dear life in the bottom half to avoid matching the franchise record for largest blown lead.
The eight runs produced by the Mets on Friday exceeded their total in the previous four games against Atlanta (seven). He had been in an 0-for-15 slump.
Replays showed that Bonifacio’s knee might have touched the plate before the tag, but the call was confirmed upon video review, as umpires ruled the tag was made before he touched the plate and also that d’Arnaud – the brother of Braves utility player Chase d’Arnaud – did not violate the home-plate collision rule.
In the fifth, the Mets scored three runs on a two-run single by d’Arnaud and a sacrifice fly from Matz. He allowed only one hit in a 6-0 shutout of the Mets on Sunday to improve to 6-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 12 career games, including 11 starts, against NY.
Cespedes had received a cortisone shot after leaving Wednesday’s game early with discomfort in his left wrist.
The Mets think Lucas Duda is still about a month away from returning to their lineup. He’s expected to make his scheduled start Monday at Washington. The only courageous on the current 40-man roster with a homer off Harvey is the DL’d Mallex Smith (2-for-4, homer). Smith, likely to miss eight to 10 weeks, leads all rookies in the majors with 14 stolen bases and is third on Atlanta with 21 RBIs.
