BCCI said in a statement, “As for the one-year period, Kumble is now transforming himself from being a great on the cricketing field to probably becoming a great coach that we expect him to be”.
The 45-year-old is now the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee and previously has served as the head of the BCCI’s technical committee.
Current Indian selection committee chairman Sandip Patil, Kumble, Shastri, Lalchand Rajput, Pravin Amre, Tom Moody, Stuart Law and Andy Moles were among the prominent names doing the rounds for the top job.
Kumble was recommended by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee to take over as head coach ahead of Ravi Shastri, who performed the job of Team Director successfully until the World T20.
It is not yet known whether Ravi Shastri, who was India’s team director until the end of the World Twenty20, will also make a presentation. His first assignment will be India’s four-Test tour of West Indies.
“After discussion and deliberation, we have decided that Anil Kumble will be the next head coach of the Indian cricket team for the next one year”, announced Thakur. “Yes, as you said, the interview is tomorrow and hopefully by June 24 you will get to know the name of the Indian coach”, he said. After taking 619 wickets in test cricket and 300 wickets in One-day Internationals, he is the third highest wicket-taker.
Spinner and former Indian team captain Anil Kumble will be the new coach of Indian Cricket Team.
