As far as other box office records, “Finding Dory” will now have the largest single day and opening day records for an animated film. Like “Nemo”, “Dory” stars Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks, with actors including Ed O’Neill, Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, and Diane Keaton coming aboard for the new film.
In the second place, the action-comedy “Central Intelligence” also has a solid opening with 34.5 million dollars from 3,508 locations.
Disney’s executive vice-president of distribution, Dave Hollis, said the new record showed the enduring popularity of the underwater tale. Gerald doesn’t move or think like the two other sea lions in the film, who are depicted as nearly bullies as they pretty shamefully trick and mock Gerald for his disability.
Finding Dory comes 13 years after predecessor Finding Nemo. It also reminds of the power of families in driving mega openings, as well as underscoring the nostalgia for Nemo.
After the Finding Dory credits, the scene switches to sea lions Fluke and Rudder on their rock outside of the Monterrey Marine Life Institute.
The film sees former class geek Johnson return to his high school as a muscular special agent where he enlists the former schools sports star Hart on a risky mission.
Duncan Jones’s Warcraft: The Beginning followed behind, opening to $3.4 million.
Third place went to The Conjuring 2 which brought in $15.5 million, raising its total domestic gross to $71.7 million.
The sequel to Now You See Me has grossed $US41 million in two weeks while the video game adaptation has netted $US38 million over the same time span.
The Short Term Memory Loss Dory smashed United States box office records and reached to $136,183,170 (USA) on 17 June 2016.
Thirteen years back, “Finding Nemo” garnered much success, ending its domestic box office run with $339 million.
