At least 6 tornado touchdowns confirmed in northern IL

Atlantic City Electric said almost 6,000 homes and businesses remained without power Wednesday, down from more than 34,000 customers on Tuesday.

A small EF0 tornado that developed in southwestern Cass County, north of Staples, with maximum winds estimated at 65 miles per hour.

Jeff Maierhofer told WLS-TV that his farm sustained extensive damage when the storm hit the village about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.

Brookston made the declaration Thursday morning after the entire town lost power.

Severe storms swept northern and central IN overnight, toppling trees with winds up to 100 miles per hour and leaving almost 30,000 homes and businesses without power.

A tornado watch issued for a swath of Iowa, Illinois and Indiana Wednesday evening – stretching from Cedar Rapids to Chicago and northwestern Indiana – until 1 a.m. Thursday local time.

By the high winds to a trailer park, the higher fire officials and the sheriff’s department are not able to confirm the early reports of damage. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. reported 3,000 outages.

– Some remained without power and a few flights were canceled Thursday morning as IL residents recovered from powerful storms, including four tornadoes that touched down Wednesday night. And now the Officials plan to conduct surveys Thursday to determine exactly how many tornadoes touched down and the paths they took, according to the service.
