CWS: Coastal Carolina takes out TCU to advance to final

“It felt really good”. Coastal Carolina and Texas Tech, anxious to avoid elimination, ended up digging into their bullpens early, even after those bullpens had been filled with a tsunami of inflatables pouring in from the TD Ameritrade Park bleachers.

“To see him go out there and have the success he had against a lineup that’s one of the best in the country, it was one of my favorite moments since I’ve been a part of this program”, Howard said. “But thank God it got out”.

Bracket one teams, Arizona and Oklahoma State will play at 2 p.m. (CT), while bracket two participants, Coastal Carolina and TCU will face off again at 7 p.m. (CT).

There, Coastal has gone 4-1, with the assistance of an inflatable shark named Bruce lurking in the dugout, to earn a spot opposite Arizona, marking just the second time in CWS history that the two finalists have emerged from the loser’s bracket.

Only three teams from outside the traditional power conferences – Rice (2003), Cal State Fullerton (2004) and Fresno State (2008) – have won the College World Series in the last 20 years, and no program of any kind has pulled off the feat in its first appearance since Minnesota in 1956.

Why would he? From May 15 to June 21, the Horned Frogs won 16 out of 18 games and reached the semifinals of the College World Series.

“[I was] just staying with the process”.

“I dreamt of coming to Omaha. I think in order for us to be the team we want to be, and we’ve been all year, we have to hit 1 through 9”.

G.K. Young ripped a two-run triple off the glove of centerfielder Dane Steinhagen with two away in the third as CCU took a 3-0 lead.

“It’s hard to – we had so many new players going into the season”, he said. “(We are) being selfless when we’re asked to bunt and being relentless when we’ve got people in scoring position and getting it done.

“If you had told me we would be where we’re at right now four months ago, two months ago, maybe three weeks ago, I’m not sure I would have laid a whole lot of money on it by any means”, coach Gary Gilmore said.

While the majority of America may not be all that familiar with “Coastal” – a 10,000-student public, liberal arts school in Conway – folks in the Carolinas know. “Chadwick was scattering the ball all over the place and if he’s not over there doing what he did, we probably don’t win”. After Cunningham struck out Luke Baker strikeout, Elliott Barzilli looped an RBI single to right center to plate Warner and put runners on the corners.

The Chanticleers will now play the Arizona Wildcats in a best-of-three series on Monday. “But he got the barrel out on it”, Beckwith said. “We’ve got to realize that we’ve got to win two games, so worst-case scenario we’re out here three days”.

Both teams are facing question marks with their pitching situation heading into these final two or three games of the year, but both are very similar, and neither one is truly a “cinderella” despite the odds. They only have one HR in the CWS though, the same amount as Arizona.
