Maker of hacked radio says system is unique to Fiat Chrysler

Harman global Industries Inc., the maker of the audio system in the Jeep Cherokee that was hacked remotely, said the software flaw that allowed that incident isn’t in infotainment systems it supplies to other automakers.

Harman is the supplier of Kardon-branded vehicle infotainment systems to Fiat Chrysler and several other automakers, including BMW, Daimler and Volvo. Fiat Chrysler could not be immediately reached for comment. They were to release specifics about their attack at a hackers’ conference in Las Vegas this week. He says the radios were developed five or more years ago and don’t have as much security as current products.

Paliwal said Harman did not anticipate any financial impact related to the recall. “So it’s a unique situation”. They were able to control critical functions such as brakes and steering. “Our system was safe and secure”, commented, hinting the issue was most likely initiated by a a “hole” or port opening in a network. “Once you get in, then you can mimic as if you are one of the authorized messengers, you start to send messages”.

“We don t believe this condition developes in a other automobile aside of Fiat Chrysler“, Harman Chief Executive Dinesh Paliwal explained Reuters.

NHTSA said it is investigating about 2.8 million Harman radios.

“If sufficient similarities exist, the investigation will examine if there is cause for concern that security issues exist in other Harman Kardon products”.

The vulnerability was exposed last week in a Wired magazine story. However, the plaintiffs argue in their lawsuit the fix the automaker mailed to affected customers on a USB drive didn’t solve the underlying design and system architecture problems.

Harman on Tuesday also reported fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $1.37 a share, beating the $1.31 average of analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
