LG’s aim seems to bring the power of the smartphone to a form factor that it believes many still have an affection for.

LG said, quoting a report from market researcher GfK, flip-style smartphones account for about 20 percent of the entire market, and that there is a plenty of growth potential with the cheaper model. The Wine Smart is a rebranded version of the LG Gentle which the company launched in South Korea last month and features a 3.2in touchscreen and runs the latest version of Android.

In terms of specifications, the LG Wine Smart features a a single 3.2-inch LCD display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution. The Wine Smart includes LG’s Safety Care feature which can be set to automatically transmit emergency alerts and real-time location to pre-selected contacts whenever the user needs immediate assistance. The smartphone also has a microSD card slot to let users expand the built-in storage.

Hardware wise, the device is at the bottom of the low-end pit, yet still it will come with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop preloaded, and will have 4G LTE network connectivity.

“Our goal with LG Wine Smart was to create a smartphone that fans of flip phones could embrace”, Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications LG Mobile Communications, said in a statement.
