Overwatch overtakes League of Legends as Korea’s most popular internet cafe game
If you don’t already know, in this case it might mean you live under a stairwell, Overwatch is taking over the gaming community.

It also comes as the game’s tier-based Competitive mode begins its rollout, with the PC version’s debut competitive season beginning today and running until August 18th.
Blizzard’s games have been immensely popular in Korea since Starcraft launched in the late nineties. Many gamers in the country get in their playing time at local cafes.
According to Gametrics, who records information about the games being played in PC bangs (internet cafes) in South Korea, Overwatch is not only one of the most popular games in the country, but it has outright passed League of Legends in terms of overall percentage of players. With the looming rollout of competitive modes in the new FPS darling, Overwatch doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. League of Legends has securely held the top spot on Gametrics’ charts for years, so it’s quite notable that Overwatch has edged it out (by a very small margin of roughly one and a half percent) after just over a month on sale. The game saw over 7 million players within its first week of sale, and was ranked among the best selling games in May, despite being released towards the end of the month.

In the past four or so years, Riot Games’ League of Legends dominated the South Korean weekly gaming charts, and was the most-played game each week in PC gaming cafes. Only time will tell.
