“Today’s vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy”, Corbyn said in a statement.

If more than two candidates stand, Tory MPs will vote next week to whittle down the field to two nominees, before the new leader is chosen by a postal ballot of party members, who now number about 150,000.

“I would not be able to do my job if I did not have the support of the parliamentary party, regardless of the mandate that members give me”.

But the Guardian reported that the result is likely to lead to a direct challenge to Mr Corbyn.

The news comes after the Labour leader said he would not betray his grassroots supporters by resigning following an overwhelming vote of no confidence by Labour MPs.

But one supporter said Mr Evans’ comments were applicable to MPs “plotting” against the party leader. “On behalf of the constituency I would ask you to make a clear public statement of support for him”, the letter from the local party chair read, published on Huffington Post. British Labour Party MPs voted massively against their leader on Tuesday amid political turmoil in Britain after a vote to leave the European Union (EU) as candidates to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron vied for power behind the scenes.

“There are a lot of flat earthers out there who have got to come to terms with the fact the world is not as they like it”, the source said.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said Mr Corbyn was “not going anywhere”.

He told Sky News: “It’s probably the worst crisis since Labour’s formation, in its current form, in 1918”.

“If I was in his position, if I had lost the confidence of 80% of colleagues I would resign because I could simply not do my job”, she told ITV Border.

Corbyn, who has long had a strained relationship with Labour’s MPs, nearly immediately came under pressure to quit because of his lacklustre role in promoting the Remain camp, which Labour officially campaigned for.
