Nicolas Winding Refn Wants To Direct A ‘Batgirl’ Movie

There’s no shortage of people – us included – who want to see a Batgirl adventure on screen, but we’d never thought that Nicolas Winding Refn (The Neon Demon, Drive, Bronson) would want to do it. When you knowingly go into destroy something that had been universally loved, by doing something completely different, it’s always scary. But just when order appears restored, Refn cranks this paradoxical style up to 11 and sends viewers out with what’s sure to be one of the year’s most startling sights, one as gorgeous as it is frightful and even more parts unforgettable.

There are few movies that are hard to properly address without spoiling – either plot elements or scenes that make a greater impact if you don’t know they’re coming – but The Neon Demon is one of them. In a recent interview, he revealed he wanted to make a Batgirl movie. “Let’s get Warner working on it”, Refn told Business Insider. As of right now, a Batgirl movie isn’t in the cards yet. But, even then, we’ve got Black Widow making appearances, Captain Marvel getting her own movie, Supergirl getting her own show – we’re getting there, slowly.

Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman are already taken, so with that, Refn said he would take on Batgirl.

Despite losing out on Wonder Woman and following-up Drive with two more indie art films Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon, Refn is still interested in superheroes.

Ventures into the cutthroat profession’s numerous arenas follow, but despite the copious gazing at lovely young women and their often stilted yet industry-apt dialogue, “The Neon Demon” never comes off as empty exploitation.

But, if Warner Bros is looking for a director, one Nicolas Winding Refn has tossed his name into the pile. The film takes a metaphorical look at narcissism and beauty which is set against the backdrop of the harsh fashion industry.

The Neon Demon grew organically out of a previously announced project, a horror film called I Walk With The Dead that was meant to reunite the director with his Drive star Carey Mulligan. But fans are definitely waiting to watch the new “Batgirl” movie in the near future.
