Wayne Rooney says England’s new manager does not have to be English, following the resignation of Roy Hodgson after his team’s poor Euro 2016 campaign.

“If anyone has his number or that of his agent I would love to have it”. It wasn’t a good night, for anybody, because we wanted to stay in this tournament and do well.

Hodgson had a good record in qualifiers, with England enjoying a ideal 10 wins in their section to reach Euro 2016, but he won only three of 11 games at major tournaments. I did so because I’ve never shirked a press conference, I’ve asked questions for four years, and when I was told it could be construed that I was frightened to come, I chose to come.

“This will probably be a day that we will talk about for the rest of our lives and now we get an even bigger chance in a week”, added Hallgrimsson, who will take sole charge of the team after the Euros.

“We’ve come such a long way and football has a amusing way of bringing out emotions, as you’ve seen when we played them [England] a couple of weeks ago”.

The Independent understands that the FA’s three-man panel – made up of chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and vice-chairman David Gill – are exploring the possibility of approaching Wenger.

“It’s not an easy job anyway, the England job”, he said.

Hodgson rejected the accusation that the job had become “impossible” and was optimistic for the team because of the young players coming through.

After being encouraged by the team’s displays in the group stages, Hodgson did not expect England to turn in such an abject performance against Iceland.

“We had wonderful support throughout and people are going to have opinions and they deserve to on what’s happened tonight”.

“I think we need to have a wide consultation”.

“I am extremely disappointed, of course, about tonight’s result and ultimately our exit from the competition”.

“We will get a lot of flak and we deserve it”, said the Manchester City stopper.

“They played to their strengths and that is what we are trying to do”.

As soon as Roy Hodgson resigned the 45-year-old English star showed interest in taking up the job. “There is not one single thing that we can say “if we fix that it will work”.
