PepsiCo is putting aspartame back in some of its diet beverages less than a year after pulling the artificial sweetener as part of a marketing move over safety concerns. Diet Pepsi Classic Sweetener Blend will contain aspartame in its formula.

Per-capita soda consumption in the U.S.is at a three-decade low as more consumers switch to bottled water and other beverages, including energy drinks and teas.

You might remember the clear Pepsi from the 1990s. The new brand was featured in a 1993 Super Bowl commercial, carrying the tagline, “You’ve never seen a taste like this” to Van Halen’s hit song “Right Now”. The product was pulled from shelves within two years.

Meanwhile Crystal Pepsi will reportedly be making a comeback this August.

Meanwhile, Pepsi MAX will be re-introduced to US consumers as Pepsi Zero Sugar and will still contain aspartame.

Nobody drank it the first time but PepsiCo is hoping Crystal Pepsi will take off in 2016. Our neighbors to the north, Canada, will start getting the pop culture icon, starting July 11.
