Gunman shoots 1 in downtown Denver, kills self

The woman who was shot by a man in a downtown Denver building on Tuesday afternoon died Wednesday morning and the shooter was her estranged husband, the Denver Police Department said. Detectives are working to determine the connection between the victim and the suspect.

According to police, “this was not a random shooting”. Video footage revealed occupants of the building and nearby offices were evacuated, as citizens can be seen running from the building with hands raised in a “don’t shoot” fashion.

Police said via Twitter they received reports of a man with a gun in the 1500 block of Wynkoop Street. Emergency crews poured into the area after a gunman opened fire in a crowded office building in Denver, Colorado Tuesday afternoon, June 28, 2016. The scene was considered secure as of 3:37 p.m.

Denver police say at least one person is hospitalized after reports of a shooting in downtown Denver. She was transported in critical condition, Schepman said. He said a number of non-profit organizations are in that building.

The victim, identified by KCNC as Cara Russell, 52, had filed for divorce from the shooter in April.

Police said the shooter was banned from the airport in Buena Vista. Police are asking that people avoid the area.

She was an executive director for an agency on the second floor of The Alliance Center at 1536 Wynkoop St.

All shuttles and bus service, including the Mall Shuttle along the 16th Street Mall were suspended in the area.
