Marlins’ Adeiny Hechavarria collects first career walkoff RBI

The blown save cost Jose Fernandez a win and marked the fifth time this year that Ramos failed to slam the door. He fanned Norris on an 84 miles per hour curveball to end his outing on 112 pitches (74 strikes). In the top of the ninth, he was two outs from tying a record. Had he won, he would have tied Johnny Allen (1932-33) and LaMarr Hoyt (1980-82) as the only major league pitchers since 1900 to have won the first 16 decisions of their career. Amarista’s triple is notable for the fact that it was the only extra-base hit allowed by Marlins starter Jose Fernandez. Shieldsy locked things down for the remainder of his start, keeping things awfully 1-2-3 for the Marlins until he was swapped for a pinch-hit opportunity in the 7th.

Adeiny Hechavarria’s first career walkoff hit and RBI, a three-run home run to center field, lifted the Marlins to a 5-2 victory in front of 25,228 at Marlins Park on Sunday afternoon.

That hardly mattered in the bottom of the ninth, however. It was his fifth homer of the season, and it came on a 1-0 pitch from reliever Brandon Maurer (7-4).Maurer walked two batters in the inning, fell behind on Hechavarria and watched the Marlins shortstop drill his one-out homer to left-center.

The Padres (51-54) were denied a sweep as their four-game winning streak ended.

“It was probably a little more personal”, Fernandez said of facing the Padres again.

“He is competitive”, Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said of Fernandez. “He loves it out there”. He fanned two batters in all but the third inning.

It was that kind of day for the Padres, who managed four hits and two walks against Fernandez. After striking out on three pitches in the first, the left fielder did it twice more against Fernandez. But Capps left the game due to stiffness in his right elbow and will have an MRI on Monday. Mike Dunn replaced him on the mound and finished the job, with Upton swinging over a slider. Despaigne allowed one run and two hits in six innings. It was Yelich’s first home run since July 3 against the Chicago Cubs. It raised his average above.200. “I felt strong. I felt like my stuff was there. It resulted in a home run without me looking for it, and I’m excited”.

The San Diego Padres (49-53) roll into Miami to play the Marlins (42-60) for a weekend series.

“(The Padres) were able to eliminate other pitches and just (wait for fastballs)”, Jennings said of Urena’s issues. “I kept the team in the game but unfortunately it didn’t work out our way”. We’re playing good baseball right now. “We’re happy about that, and we’re just trying to win game by game”.

“They showed confidence in us”, Solarte, speaking in Spanish, said of Padres management, which decided not to make wholesale changes at the trade deadline.
