Robinson falls asleep at wheel, drives into a pond

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson was found asleep at the wheel after his vehicle went off the road and into a retention pond in the early morning of Sunday, July 3.

According to a police report (via the Florida Times-Union), an officer knocked on a passenger-side window in order to wake the pair up, but Robinson “opened his eyes and then went back to sleep”.

Robinson, 25, would not get out of the auto after repeated attempts by police officers to get him out of the vehicle, because he believed he was still on the road.

According to the report, Robinson was passed out the whole time. “The driver thought he was on a road and did not want to exit the vehicle”, the police report said.

The passenger refused to exit the vehicle and had to be pulled out of the auto. The driver’s side of the vehicle was submerged in the pond, so the officer approached the passenger side and knocked on the window to wake the two up, according to the report.

The report said Robinson, 25, was driving a black Chevy Impala west on Beach Boulevard and tried to turn left on Southside Boulevard, but made a wide left turn that sent the vehicle over a sidewalk and down an embankment into the pond.

The officer stated that Robinson made a wide turn that caused the vehicle to go over the sidewalk and into the pond and there were no skid marks indicating he attempted to slow down.

It’s a very odd situation, but it appears Robinson is only guilty of being entirely too exhausted and trying to drive.

“The driver tried about three times to open the driver’s door which was the side that was underwater”.

The report stated that an officer determined that Robinson was not impaired: “Ofc”.

“I just wanted to let everyone know that I was involved in a single-car accident on Saturday night, and thankfully, everyone was safe and remained unharmed”, Robinson said Tuesday on Twitter. “I am just glad that everyone was safe”, he wrote.

Robinson, a phenomenal college quarterback for the Wolverines, has been a solid contributor in his three seasons with the Jaguars. He is expected to be used as a change of pace option in the backfield this season behind starter Chris Ivory.
