Bail of $300000 for man accused in courthouse shooting

A man fatally shot a defendant waiting in a small courtyard outside the county courthouse. Sheriff Randy Tucker says Madison County deputies rushed out of the courthouse after the shooting. But as he waited on the courthouse grounds with his attorney, a young man drove up, climbed out of the auto, and shot him once in the vest.

No records of the charge appeared in a Monday search of circuit court records by The Associated Press, not surprising since Wells hasn’t been indicted.

Prosecutors expected him to reject a plea offer and the judge would have set the case for trial, Mr Guest said.

Kendrick Brown, who was facing felony cocaine charges, could have faced up to life in prison under Mississippi’s three strikes habitual offender law because of two earlier felony drug convictions. They say he has no prior criminal record, but he did have a connection to Brown – his mother, Sherry Wells, was expected to testify against the accused drug dealer, and she was shot and wounded in the leg Saturday night by an unknown party.

“My office has very great trust in local law enforcement”, said District Attorney Michael Guest. But despite an hour of sifting through pine straw, Tucker said, authorities hadn’t found the shell. She was moved to a hospital in an ambulance afterwards, WAPT added.

The 25-year-old Brooks said he would stand by Wells, but said he could understand the possibility that Wells might have been angered by his mother’s shooting.

24-year-old William Wells appeared in court on Tuesday and his bond has been set at $300 thousand. Brown, who authorities say was scheduled to make a court appearance Monday, died at the courthouse.

The man accused in a Mississippi courthouse shooting was arrested in June on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a weapon after a fistfight, contradicting earlier statements by police that the suspect had never before been in serious trouble. He said, “There would have been, in my opinion, no way this could have been stopped,” as stated by Quad-Cities Online.

The shooting happened in a small courtyard outside Madison County’s criminal courthouse in Canton.

Within seconds of the shooting Madison County Deputies had Wells in custody. Fifteen police vehicles are on the scene at the red-brick criminal courthouse for Madison County in Canton. In the movie, a father played by Samuel L. Jackson goes to court and kills two men on trial over the rape of his daughter. The courthouse is a few blocks north of Canton’s foremost sq. and historic district.
