A record number of Americans are expected to hit the road this holiday weekend, but local gas prices won’t be hitting Twin Lakes Area drivers in the wallet. The average USA price is $2.28 a gallon, compared to $2.76.
“Gas prices started out the year at $1.99, everyone was so excited”. But even as USA crude output shows signs of slowing and consumers guzzle more fuel, gasoline prices have stayed relatively low.
Arizona is smack dab in the middle of the national price range.
The average gallon of regular unleaded gas last year was 50 cents higher than this year.
Gas prices are the lowest they’ve been on a 4th of a July weekend in over a decade. The record for diesel – $4.845 – was the same day.
According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, average airfares for the top 40 domestic flight routes will be 9 percent less this Independence Day than in 2015, with an average roundtrip ticket costing $207.
AAA expects to rescue more than 370,000 motorists during this travel period.
The Findlay Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is preparing for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
The Department of Public Safety did, however, issue a warning to people driving this Fourth of July weekend: obey the law.
“I do think the Monday holiday is a big factor in spurring more travel but we also have low gasoline prices coupled with an improving economy”, Maguire said.
AAA Carolinas projects that almost 1.2 million North Carolinians will travel this weekend hitting a record high for Fourth of July travel.
“When gas prices are this low, it just becomes more convenient to take a road trip and it doesn’t seem that it’s as expensive”, Jenkins said. That’s motivating an estimated 36 million people to make a road trip for the weekend.

Lodging prices are expected to be down slightly to $144 per night for a AAA Three Diamond hotel, while vehicle rental rates are expected to be six percent higher than past year at $75 on average. AAA has since revised that number to say that 42.3 million people actually traveled.
