She died at her home in Manchester in northern England Saturday, publicist Neil Reading said.
The Royle Family star, who died Saturday at age 52 after a long battle with lung cancer, never lost her sense of humour, says her screenwriter pal Carmel Morgan.
CAROLINE Aherne “achieved everything she could have wanted” and was laughing with pals just days before her death, a close friend of the actress has said.
Noel Gallagher, who paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend Caroline Aherne by dedicating his song Half The World Away to her during a show in America.
“I also got to thank her for all her work and particularly the episode of the Royle Family in which Nana passed away”.
The Royle Family, which Aherne co-wrote along with friend Craig Cash – who played Dave Best in the show – came after a suicide attempt. “She left on her own”.
Her first TV appearances were as the acerbic comic character Mrs Merton in a semi-regular spot on the late night Granada TV talk show Upfront in 1990.
Tributes poured in for the ever-so-popular lady who was most famous for her role in British sitcoms The Royle Family and Mrs Merton – amongst so many more.
The star also had a string of failed relationships – her marriage to former New Order guitarist Peter Hook ended and she began a romance with TV researcher Matt Bowers. What a sad, sad day. She was absolutely wonderful and incredible to work for. “I can’t think of anything, but she would”.
She was a lovely, fearless person and she was a pioneer.
According to insiders, Aherne broke the news that her the disease was terminal in May, but then didn’t update them when her condition worsened.
The song was used as the theme tune for Aherne’s sitcom The Royle Family.
Very sad to hear of Caroline Aherne’s passing. “Her death is a reminder how much she and her writing were, and still are, the exception”. I know it’s been said a lot but she really was a pioneer. It was those little things I loved her for. This was the last time I saw her.

Chester born comedian Jeff Green tweeted: “Caroline Aherne, funniest, down to earth, cleverest, most complicated comedian I’ve ever known”.
